I'm currently developing a new body of work, Pigment: A Mountain Walk in Forty Colours, inspired by the landscapes, industrial histories and geological materials of Fleetwith Pike and Honister in the Lake District.
The project explores how colour can become a way of understanding landscape. Working with earths, slate dust and other naturally occurring materials gathered during repeated visits to the fells, I'm creating a series of forty pigments that reflect the changing geology, histories and textures of a single mountain walk. These pigments are then carefully processed by hand and used to develop drawings, prints and other forms of mark-making. The project also draws on archival research, local histories and conversations with people who know these landscapes well.
Pigment continues my long-standing interest in walking as a creative and research methodology, exploring how landscape, material and embodied experience can come together through artistic practice. The project is currently in development and will eventually lead to new artworks, publications, guided walks and exhibitions.
