Becoming Rock: Cows Mouth, Silverdale

Becoming Rock: Cows Mouth, Silverdale

2023, Cow’s Mouth, Silverdale, Morecambe Bay

In July 2023, I was diagnosed with DCIS (pre-invasive breast cancer) and subsequently underwent several surgeries. In Becoming Rock, I used photography, film and drawing to document and express my experience. This involved an extended period of photographing my body within rocky locations, including Cow’s Mouth, a cove in Silverdale, Morecambe Bay. The Silverdale works respond to the Carboniferous limestone formations, making connections between the calcium-rich limestone landscape and the calcifications identified through mammography that led to my diagnosis.

The four multi-layered digital images bring together photographs of the landscape and rock; my body on and within the rock as I lay or leant against it; lichen and details of the rock surface; and medical images from my biopsy. These different layers bring body, surgery and landscape together, exploring connections between my medical experience and geological form.
